I'm looking for a role at an early stage startup where I can do both design and implementation for greenfield apps. I have the most experience with data visualization, but also enjoy doing general application development. I haven't found an industry I'm not interested in. The main importance for me is that I believe in the business idea/strategy at the beginning.

I managed them directly

This developer joined the centre for applied forecasting as our first and sole engineer. Everything technical that existed in the company was built by them: the entire stack, the training modules, the documentation, the integrations, and support.

The company was established on the thesis that forecasting is really about identifying conditional risks: understanding what happens if certain conditions occur. This developer took that idea and made it real. What they built is, in my view, the best conditional forecasting tool in the industry. It’s technically elegant, reliable, and aligned with how forecasters and clients actually work.

This developer has a rare combination of independence and cooperation: they can take a vague concept and turn it into something robust and usable, yet they’re also a generous collaborator. Working from Australia, they bridged time zones to support users and colleagues in various regions.

If you have an idea that needs to become a working, production-quality product, or if you’re looking for someone who can both think and build at a very high level, I can’t recommend this developer highly enough. They made our abstract ideas tangible and valuable, and I’d work with them again in a heartbeat.

Work experience

Proudest professional achievement
I was the only dev at the startup, and to start with I made interactive and responsive visualisations for the existing method of collecting forecasts (online forms and spreadsheets). This gave me some time to learn the best way to represent conditional forecasting and deliver some "wow" immediately. The founder had a vision for the product and I helped fill in all the details. In the early mockups I used design software to get feedback and iterate quickly, then build out the app. In addition to designing and building, I took responsibility for operations, training, support and help which is typical at a startup - I like this because it gives more freedom, reward and variety. I was able to do some deep and difficult work. For example, other tools at most will let you forecast with skewed logistic distributions. The app allowed users to edit a simple skewed logistic and switch to a custom curve (smoothed with monotonic cubic splines) which is not available in other forecasting tools. A good moment was when a leading AI research organisation engaged us to make forecasts for them - they even used the visualisation from the app in their publications (a paper on evaluating frontier models for dangerous capabilities). This was the most rewarding role I have had, and my best work so far.
